Candle Care
How to care FOR your candles
Caring for your candles is not just about prolonging their life but also about ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. Our high-quality candles, crafted with care and attention, can transform your space with their fragrance and ambiance. However, to make the most of these fragrant treasures, it’s crucial to understand and practice proper candle care. This guide will walk you through the essential steps and best practices to ensure your candles burn cleanly, safely, and efficiently, enhancing your experience with every light.
Properly Burn Your Candle on Its Maiden Lighting
The first burn is crucial for setting the “candle memory.” This sets the stage for future performance. It’s essential to allow the candle to burn long enough so that the wax melts across the entire surface to the edges of the container. This process, known as achieving a full melt pool, prevents “tunneling,” where the candle burns down the middle, leaving a ring of unused wax along the sides. Failing to establish a full melt pool can result in wasted wax and a significantly reduced lifespan for your candle. To ensure a proper initial burn, follow these steps:
- Place your candle on a heat-resistant surface away from drafts, flammable objects, and out of reach of children or pets.
- Light the candle and allow it to burn until the wax melts across the entire surface, usually about 1 hour per inch of the candle’s diameter. In our case, this will be about 1-2 hours.
Best Practices for Subsequent Lighting
After the initial burn, maintaining your candle’s condition requires regular care:
Wick Trimming: Before each use, trim the wick to about 5 mm to 1 cm. This prevents the flame from becoming too large, which can cause soot deposits on the container and rapid, uneven burning.
Avoid Drafts: Keep your candle away from drafts, vents, or air currents. This helps prevent rapid or uneven burning, soot formation, and potential fire hazards.
Burning Time: Do not burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Excessive burning can lead to overheating of the container and affect the candle’s fragrance and performance. Overheating can create unattractive oil stains on the outer layer of your beautiful concrete vessel.
Candle Storage: When not in use, store your candle in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or intense light. Cover it with a lid to protect the wax from dust and to preserve the fragrance.
Additional Tips for an Enhanced Candle Experience
Candle Placement: Always place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface to prevent heat damage to underlying surfaces and to minimize the risk of accidents.
Cleaning Your Candle: Keep the wax pool clear of wick trimmings, matches, and debris to ensure a clean burn.
Extinguishing Your Candle: Use a candle snuffer or gently blow out the flame to prevent hot wax from splattering. Avoid using water to extinguish the flame as it can cause the hot wax to splatter and/or the hot concrete vessel to crack.
Reusing Candle Containers: Once your candle has burned down, consider cleaning out your vessel and repurposing it. Our soy wax blend, in particular, is easy to clean with warm soapy water, allowing you to reuse your beautiful vessels for storage or decoration.
By following these candle care tips, you can ensure the longevity of your candles, maximize their fragrance release, and enjoy a safer, more delightful experience with each burn. Remember, taking care of your candles not only enhances your enjoyment but also ensures their beauty and fragrance continue to enrich your space for as long as possible.
